The Molten Record

Hot Pavement

The sky is still blue, but it's sure looking brown
Choking gray clouds snow ash on the town
The sun is blood red, hazy glare looking down
The hot pavement is stinging my feet.

Silent white drifting catches sunlight glow
Orange on all sides offers nowhere to go
Horizon is brighter and threatens to grow
The hot pavement shimmers with heat.

There's no panic in waiting for change on its way
Bubbling tar streaked with smeared bits of gray
Light changes little to nighttime from day
The hot pavement guides not one retreat.

The annual feast of flames rages on
Churns forest to charcoal with cavernous yawn
Carves up the landscape till all life is gone
The hot pavement knows infernos must eat.

Happy wildfire season!

A nighttime view of Utah mountains across the valley, lit up orange with bright flames on the mountains.
